OAALJ Board Meeting Minutes

April 13, 2006

In attendance: Larry Smith, Alison Webster, Charlotte Rutherford and Bernadette Janet.  (Quorum requirement not met).

The Board members in attendance discussed possible topics for the conference, if we were to sponsor one.  All agreed that there was a need for a seminar on writing.  Diversity and ethics were also mentioned.  We agreed that it would be best to bring in an expert in the field, as opposed to having ALJs do the training.  We discussed hiring one of the known legal writing gurus, such as Bryan Garner of Law Prose, Inc., Steven Wilburs from the University of Minnesota, Timothy Terrell of Emory University or Elizabeth Francis of NJC, UN Reno. 

Charlotte agreed to look into the cost of bringing in one of these speakers.  Larry agreed to talk with Tom Ewing about having the Office of Administrative Hearings defray some of the costs.
